I got 2 pine bar stools from craiglist for $10 each for our kitchen car counter. I knew I wanted to paint them as I am not a fan of the pine shade. So here is what I did:
1. Slightly sanded the bar stools with sandpaper so as to remove some of the glossy finish they already had.
Then applied 1 coat of primer after thoroughly cleaning them. You can buy primer from any paint/home goods store.
2. Spay painted one fourth of the legs with golden. Make sure to cover your face and hands while using spray paint to prevent skin contact or inhaling of fumes.
3.Chalk Painted remaining portion with 'Americana' Chalk Paint in deep orange shade. I applied 2-3 coats.
Chalk paints are environment friendly with low VOCs (Volatile organic compound).
4. For final finish, applied wax on the chalk painted portion with a dry cloth or paper towel. I used 'Folkart Home Decor' wax.
Note: Waxing is done to seal and protect chalk painted surface. If you are using normal acrylic paint, you may give a coat of polyurethane. This will protect the surface from scratches and peels.
Also sanding and primer are not usually required if using chalk paint, which is a great advantage. However I did that mainly because of the acrylic spray paint which was used for the golden finish on the legs. For acrylic paint to adhere well to the surface, sanding and priming are required. Or you can opt for a primer which says 'no sanding required'. It will save some time.
Here is how I got them initially:
