After our move to the new home, I had a used kitchen rug with faded prints which I didn't trash but just kept in my laundry room. The kitchen tile was getting too cold for me that I decided it's time to put the rug back. Obviously I didn't want to put the faded rug, so I explored on how I can make one myself and below is the end result ( I got the guidelines from http://sailrite.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/how-to-make-a-no-sew-fabric-rug/)
I used:
1. Better Home & Gardens kitchen foam mat (used)
2. Printed fabric from Hobby Lobby
3. 3M general purpose spray adhesive
4. Miniwax Polycrylic protective finish
Steps:
1. Cut the fabric based on the size of the rug leaving 1 inch on four sides for folding and gluing.
2. Spray the adhesive on the front side on the rug, making sure that entire surface is covered.
3. Place the fabric immediately over the sprayed adhesive ensuring that you leave enough fabric on 4 sides. Press the fabric thoroughly to remove any air bubbles.
4. Turn the rug upside down and spray the adhesive on all 4 sides and also on the fabric.
5. Fold the fabric and stick to all 4 sides carefully.
6. Keep something heavy on the rug and leave it for 30 mins to allow the adhesive and fabric bond together.
7. Finally Apply 1 or 2 coats of polycrylic finish over the fabric to protect the rug from water/dust. I applied 2 coats leaving 20-30 mins drying time in between.
If you are putting the rug on a high traffic area, then polycrylic finish really helps. I just have to wipe the rug clean when it gets dusty.
I was too excited about how my first rug came out, so I went ahead and made another one for my dining room.. I love all the blacks, pinks, greens and purple, they very well tie to the bright pink curtains I have in my dining room...
