After my first attempt with chalk paint, I decided to rejuvenate our old and boring media table..
This time I tried a new paint - FolkArt chalk paint which I got at a great deal in Joann's store. After getting inspired by some Pinterest projects that used Coral Salmon shade, I knew that is what I am going to try here..
This was definitely not a smooth task..First of all it was not wood, I was chalk painting vinyl for the first time. Even though they say priming is not required, I guess this one should have been better with primer. When I applied paint directly, it was not sticking to the surface properly. The second coat would wipe off the first coat. So I had to be very careful, gave extra time for each coat to dry off, used both roller and normal brush to finish it off the nook and corners. I think it took me 3-4 days to finish it.
The original idea was to paint the entire media stand, however I was exhausted halfway through and thought I should retain some of the black. Hubby too agreed and I think that was a better move.

The thought of taking a picture of the original piece struck me only by half way through the painting, you can see it as below:

When chalk painting Vinyl/Laminate:
- Clean the surface thoroughly
- I suggest to prime the surface first, even though chalk paint is supposed to be used without primer. Some vinyl surfaces do not react well to paints without primer.
- 1 coat of primer and then 2 coats of chalk paint. Give enough time between the coats to dry off. I just allow the surface to dry to a point where it does not stain my fingers when touched.
- When using chalk paint, it is recommended to finally wax the surface for protection and durability. I did not use wax here. This one just holds the TV and other stuffs and no one really touches the surface other than me for cleaning, so it seems to be fine. I recommend using wax for other furniture that will be constantly used.
- After drying, the paint appeared to be pretty solid and I gently clean the surface with a dry or damp cloth to remove any excessive dirt/dust.

Honestly I did not think much about how it will go together with all the shades I have in our living room.
Any way it turned out to be fine and my accent pillows already had that shades in there to compliment.
I may still need to work little bit to tie all the elements together, that will be probably one of my future posts..
