I am back with more DIY items..I am excited to decorate my new home and couldn't stop experimenting, this time with cushions..I always wanted some unique cushion covers and never saw anything exciting in shops, well even if I find one, it will be too expensive.
I wanted a no sew cover and saw few guidelines online on how to do it. So I dared to make a couple of visits to fabric shops before I can decide on any material. Finally I bought a flower print fabrics from Hobby Lobby. I got it from clearance and bought 1 yard for less than $5. Hobby Lobby is one of my favorite fabric shops. You may need to make a couple of visits to check on the clearance and new items.
I had a 20x18" pillow with a worn cover and decided to try to a hand on it. I wanted 2 of them so for the 2nd one, I took one of our old bed pillow and cut it into half, hemming the open end by hand. For no sew covers it took less than 5 mins to make one, believe me! Deciding on the measurements is the tricky part, once you get that it is pretty easy. See below how I did it.. ( I missed to take picture when I did it, so showing an example with another piece of cloth)
I used:
I yard cotton material - 45" wide. (Made 2 20x18" covers out of it)
Heat'n Bond Hem Iron-On adhesive tape
I cut the 45" wide cloth into 2 halves. For each piece fold top 2 sides by 1 inch, place the iron hem tape and press together. I wanted removable cushions so ended up folding the reverse side as in the picture- 22 inch by length (I left 1 inch on both sides for final folding) and 18 inch by width. Use hem tape on both sides. Once you are done, reverse it and iron all the 4 sides for perfection. Now insert your cushions, correct all the 4 corners and they are ready to go!!
For the first cushion, I left few more inches as I was skeptical on whether the cushions will fit or not, so they ended up slightly big but barely noticeable. For the 2nd one, I took the exact measurements so it was a correct fit.
I am really happy with my new cushions and they lighten up my living room!!
